Balaji Saktivel's film 'Kaadhal' has a different kind of climax and stands apart in the Tamil film field. Realistic plots, character building, story told behind the scenes from the point of view of the audience, self explanatory scenes.other than all these, he has produced a visual language unique to Tamil films.

Aishwarya's wedding is seen through the various eyes of people from the floors of the high story buildings and his ability to put himself in their shoes is something unique. Balaji Sakthivel answers the questions we pose him, keeping his film 'Kaadhal' as the focal point of the interview.

                                                           -ajayan bala

: You had something in mind when you started the shooting for 'Kaadhal.' What are the differences in the pre-shooting preparations and the resulting effect you see now on screen? Were you able to deliver what you originally had in mind?

"More or less, but I can't say it's fully as I imagined. Maybe I did not take 5% of it. If I had taken this after a while, my film could have turned out entirely different. For me, my 'state of the mind' eye is my art. And this film is a result of that state of mind. In fact, if someone sees the film and reviews it, you can arrive at the totality of the film. Can't say this is what I expected, for sure."

What according to you is something that turned out better than your expectations? You would also have suffered defeat sometimes, isn't it?

"I could say that the character of the little boy exceeded my expectations because I had not envisaged such importance for him in my screenplay. Then the climax is not what I had in mind and is less effective. I did not take the climax and I wish it had turned out better."

You didn't take it - what does that mean?

"What I meant by 'state of mind' decisions. Maybe if I had shot it next day, the results may have been different. Suppose you write a poem. Do you send it right away for publication? If you keep it with you another couple of days, you will make improvements on it. It's the same with films. We are having a frank talk, so I'm telling you these things. As far as the film is concerned, because the viewers were satisfied, I had a lucky escape."

The scenes in 'Kaadhal' were quite different. More than the directorial touch, one can say the scenes were imbued with a different enhanced quality. Was it intentional or accidental?

"Both. Though it embarrasses me, I am forced to give you an explanation. Seen mentally, take a sexual feeling angle. This can be denoted with a disheveled garment or no garment at all. Similarly, what I intended and did not intend, came through in the film. How I see the question is like when you ask a poet, 'Did you get your lines the very first time? Or after tearing up 10 pieces of paper?'

We could be standing at a window and watching a pair of lovers down the street, through the window. This visual keeps running before me. I have been visualized like this, and I have also shown a visualization like this. The road is a public place and people keep going and coming, but the two of them will speak with their eyes and have their own dreams, and in their dreams they will go off to far off places. It's all very easy to say. But in reality the two are standing in our filthy streets and dreaming their blissful dreams. For a long time, this idea has been tugging at me. From personal experience I know that as two people in love, they are oblivious to the stench around them. They will sit near a place where men urinate, or a dead dog will go unnoticed, so absorbed are they in each other. There's a naturalness in this that I could enjoy. When I told Milton this, he jumped in joy and we achieved this effect together. The producer who's director Shankar also permitted this. When one talks about beauty, one expects the hero and heroine to meet in a beautiful place and maybe sing a duet as well. This is the expected line of thinking, but Shankar admired and enjoyed this other way of thinking too, isn't it? That speaks for itself. As a person who has been in this field for a few years and seen many international films, there was a yearning in me. I am happy that I was able to join forces with cinematographer Vijay Milton who's a brilliant artist in his field."

Journals attribute the film's success to the stars featured in it. It's also true. How has your experience been with inexperienced stars?

"It has its advantages and disadvantages. It's good not to be under one guru's influence. If the role had gone to character actors, they would have done the job in their way of acting, that's all. This film however features fresh faces. I did not give them anything that they could not identify with, when I was selecting the cast. I did not call someone and say, "Recite this dialogue from Veerapaandiya Kattabomman." Instead I said, "Imagine your son ran away from home. How would you feel if you were him or if you were the one who ran away?" The emotions then come out naturally. Doing the unexpected is what brings out the best in someone. All I had to do was tell them to imagine what they would do in a situation like that and then go for it. That made matters simple for them. I tried to film that in 4 or 5 takes. If they did not get the dialogues right, I would say we could shoot that the next day. In those places, technical help came in useful. I won't say I even made a stone act or anything like that. For me, good behavior is more important than acting. Who then will you say is a natural? It's the ordinary man. That's why they were good for this film."

Apart from the characters, the situations were out of the common. The mechanic set, hero's house, mansion, and more than others, the friend's house were all so natural. Did you use previously known locations or did you scout for new ones specially for the film?

"A familiar looking place is something I can identify with. If there's a lane I like in Dindugal, there will be something quit  like that in Chennai also, only it will have a different name. If you see 4 people sitting on a compound wall in Dindugal, you can visualize 4 guys sitting on a compound wall in Thrivottriyur. For instance, we located the friend's house in Porur during shooting. We visualized it in a certain way and that gave life to the house. There will be a cycle in front of the house and an old man. That is positioning the artist. There will be a Pavazhamalli plant in the garden. The lady of the house will plait her daughter's hair. All this gives the house an atmosphere. Add to this the sound of bells ringing from the sonpapudi seller's cart coming down the street - (Laughs!) a mix of all this makes for a good location. There's another kind of location apart from this."

In the film there's a dialogue where Bharath tells Sandhya, "I'm a poor mechanic. Will your parents accept our love?" This is made in 3 different clothes, but edited to show in the same screen time, something new for Tamil films. Did this happen according to screenplay or on the editing table?

"It was solely my idea."

In some films, without the director realizing it, some nice elements emerge. This has happened in your film too. The hero falls every time he sees the heroine. Did you intend to use this to foretell that he would really fall down later in life, or did this just happen as the film went along?

"This makes me very happy. Whoever mentions this, I look at their faces. Usually it strikes people the 2nd or 3rd time as they follow the story. Many people had written to me that they noticed this after seeing the film about 5 times. I wanted to show this in a poetic manner. Shankar gave me the liberty, so I was able to picturise just as I wanted to. Without resorting to dialogue, I tried to show his falling through these scenes and make the audience realize this indirectly. The couple don't even say, "I love you" in the film. Everything is conveyed through emotions."

The film's highlight is when the lovers don't have a place to go for the night. So they watch 2 shows in Devi Theatre, take a bus to Tindivanam and then return. How did this idea strike you?

"This thing has happened to me after seeing the 2nd show. Not having a place, I have taken the bus, slept all the way and taken the return bus to Chennai. This has happened to me in my younger days when I came to attend interviews. I put myself in the girl's place. It's natural not to get a seat together in the bus at first, and then sitting together."

How did you select the girl to do the friend's role? She's perfect.

"She's like any friend in Chennai. We just transformed her to a Madurai type friend. There are lot of small characters that get lost in the crowd, but there could be some wonderful features in them, you know. That's why I said, "Don't do anything." Many people say act, do this or that, so when I said this, she was surprised. She wanted to know what she should do. Whenever I told her to 'behave' she did everything correctly. Even though it is a small role, she was chosen through a screen test. Then she cried and did not want to act. I told her not to worry, that every film is different and every character in the film would be spoken about. I knew, so I could say it."

Strangely, when everything in the film was quite without pretensions, the concluding marriage scene was a bit dramatic. When Stephen comes near the Pillayar temple (as if the thought just struck him) and takes out the thaali, it seemed like a poor portrayal of a drama scene. The film continuity got lost here. You could have prevented it.

"No. I had done my composing well, but the Iyer messed it up. We could not re-shoot it, that's why it seems that way to you. Actually when they are half way, Iyer would have left. Sometimes the location comes to my aid, but it did not this time. From what you have said, some scenes look like I am responsible for their creation. That is a plus, but here the location became a minus for me. I could not compose it, could not keep a camera inside, so it became a bit dramatic. Good and bad happen when you work according to plan or otherwise. Anyway, life itself is full of good and bad."

You have said in your interviews that your film is based on what someone told you in a train. Are the scenes also what he described?

"Not everything is what he said. The basic outline only, rest is all my imagination. I have never seen the girl. I did not know if the boy was doing a mechanic's job. I have met only the husband. Based on what he said, I made the film. If it were not true, there was no need for him to have told me about it. The truth of the situation hit me forcibly and I took up the matter to make my film. Even though I have worked in a workshop, I do not know how to ride a motorbike!"

Finally, you say it's a story, but it seems to be a patchwork job, as if you want to make a story of it and present to the Tamil audience.

"I've been closely paying attention to your observations. There's truth in it because you have lauded some elements as well as criticized some elements in the film. I can't say that I will correct myself, but you have roused my thinking. When I was taking the film, I encountered some block, but afterwards, it wasn't there. I believe that this review will take me on a different journey."
